As a creative nonfiction writer who enjoys everything from poetry to scientific reports, I had a difficult time deciding what to write in my blog. Not because the lack of ideas, but rather the array of topics that interest me and I believe are important to discuss.
So I asked myself which topic I would be best equipped to write about while benefiting others the most. My answer? Health.
What critical information do we need to know to minimize illness and maximize health? Our quality of life is very much dependent on our mental and physical health yet we encounter many threats to our mind and body daily. My goal is to help you navigate through life with the knowledge you need to avoid the things that diminish health, and focus on the ones that benefit us.
We are all beginning to appreciate the connection between mind and body, but because of my background, my blog will focus more on physical health. I will talk a lot about health news that affects everyone — like the surprising research recently published by M.C. Kruger at the Harvard School of Public Health. In this article, Kruger reports that meeting our daily calcium through dairy products is not the best way to keep our bones healthy: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/calcium-full-story/index.html.
As you know, I have a background and interest in autoimmune disease research in particular, which will be reflected in this blog. Chronic illness, like autoimmune disease, can severely impact our abilities and quality of life. Talking about new treatments, for instance, is necessary because information is power — and in this case it is also hope.
What I write here is just the beginning of a conversation. I want this blog to be a catalyst for sharing important news through your comments and questions.
I look forward to talking with you.
